Geesje Kwak, a sixteen-year-old maid from Amsterdam, served as the inspiration for this piece. Dressed in a Japanese kimono, her portrayal aligns with Breitner's fascination with such attire. He completed thirteen artworks featuring girls in kimonos, drawing inspiration from Japanese art prints, which were part of his collection. Nonetheless, the adoption of Asian garments by Europeans has historically carried a sexual implication.
