The Thirty Six Immortal Poets have been depicted multiple times on handscrolls from the Kamakura period through the centuries. It was only at the beginning of the Edo period that these figures started to appear on large folding screens. The renowned Rinpa artist Ogata KÅrin (1658-1716) created a remarkable two-panel screen featuring a collective portrait of these poets. In this artwork, the poets are portrayed in an innovative way that borders on caricature, closely clustered together. Although the portraits are imaginative representations of historical poets, each figure is endowed with a unique personality and vivacity. This piece quickly became one of KÅrin's most frequently replicated works.
